Laser safety – the most common mistakes and how to avoid them

Laser radiation is widely used in industry, medicine, entertainment and science. Although lasers offer many benefits, their improper use can lead to serious hazards, such as damage to eyesight, skin burns and the risk of fire. Unfortunately, in many cases, laser-related accidents are due to mistakes that can be easily eliminated with proper knowledge and procedures. In this article, we outline how to ensure laser safety on the job site, the most common mistakes and tips on how to avoid them.

Lack of adequate training

One of the main reasons for laser-related accidents is a lack of knowledge about their operation and potential risks. Employees are often unaware of the power of the equipment they work with and the risks associated with laser radiation. To avoid this, invest in Laser Safety Officer (LSO) training so you have a laser safety officer in your company. Also organize regular training for all employees who operate lasers, tailored to the type of equipment used and the specifics of their work.

Inadequacy of personal protective equipment

Often workers do not use protective eyewear appropriate to the wavelength emitted by the laser. Sometimes personal protective equipment is omitted altogether. Unfortunately, many people overlook them, believing them to be unnecessary in their daily work. Examples of real-life accidents show that lack of proper eye protection can lead to permanent retinal damage after just a short exposure to radiation. Selecting the right glasses for the laser wavelength is one of the most important safety procedures.

Lack of job security

Poor alignment of the laser beam, lack of protective screens or use of reflective materials around the laser are common causes of accidents. In particular, invisible radiation such as infrared can cause injury if the operator does not take proper precautions.
